Walter Isaacson’s newly published biography of Elon Musk is among the six finalists for the Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the Year Award.

The book joins titles centered around the depletion of the world’s natural resources, navigating failure, and tackling the challenges of rapidly advancing technologies.

Roula Khalaf, FT editor and chair of the judging panel, described the selected books as “exciting, engaging, and important,” offering a valuable guide to the future of business.

The shortlisted titles for the £30,000 award are:

Material World: A Substantial Story of Our Past and Future, by Ed Conway, explores the origins and uses of six key minerals that shape our modern lifestyle, highlighting the environmental risks involved.

Right Kind of Wrong: Why Learning to Fail Can Teach Us to Thrive, by Amy Edmondson, explores the concept of “failing better” and taking smarter risks, drawing on the author’s research into “psychological safety” and fostering speak-up cultures.

How Big Things Get Done: The Surprising Factors Behind Every Successful Project, from Home Renovations to Space Exploration, by Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner, explores the reasons why megaprojects often exceed deadlines and budgets, offering insights applicable to a wider range of endeavors.

Elon Musk, by Walter Isaacson, provides an in-depth portrayal of the rise of the entrepreneur who has significantly impacted electric vehicle manufacturing, social media, and space exploration. The book was added to the shortlist after its release last week, exercising the judges’ uncommon prerogative.
