In 2024, Michelin, known for its prestigious restaurant stars, will introduce a new key emblem to recognize “exceptional hotels.” This sister emblem will highlight the world’s most outstanding hotels. The first set of hotels to receive the Michelin key will be announced in the first half of 2024. Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guides, states that the Michelin key will serve as a reliable indicator for travelers, similar to how the Michelin star represents top-tier restaurants. Currently, the Michelin guide features 5,300 hotels across 120 countries. These hotels are anonymously rated by experts who pay for their own stays.
To qualify for the Michelin key, the hotels do not have to be five-star establishments. However, they must meet specific criteria, including being a destination in itself that contributes to the local experience, excellence in interior design and architecture, individuality reflecting personality and authenticity, quality and consistency in service, comfort, and maintenance, and a balance between the level of experience and the price.
While restaurants can be awarded up to three Michelin stars, it remains unclear whether hotels can receive more than one key. One example of a hotel already recognized by Michelin is g hotel in Co Galway. Moreover, Michelin keys also have a commercial aspect as the guide offers users the ability to book featured hotels through its website or app. Hotels booked through these platforms will reportedly pay Michelin a commission of 10-15% on bookings, although the editorial and sales teams will operate independently.
Several Irish hotels are already listed in the Michelin guide, including Cashel Palace in Co Tipperary, No.1 Pery Square in Limerick, Mount Falcon in Co Mayo, The Victoria in Killarney, Co Kerry, Mount Juliet in Co Kilkenny, and Galway’s g Hotel. Other hotels featured include Muckross Park and Aghadoe Heights in Killarney, Castlemartyr Resort in Co Cork, and Lough Eske Castle in Co Donegal. Michelin also highlights Dromoland Castle and Gregan’s Castle in Co Clare, The River Lee Hotel in Cork, Sheen Falls Lodge in Kenmare, The K Club in Co Kildare, and The Cliff House in Co Waterford. In Dublin, numerous hotels like The Westbury, The Alex, The Dylan, The Intercontinental, The Merrion, The Clarence, and The Dean are listed, along with The Dean in Galway.
The Michelin hotel guide aims to offer travelers the opportunity to combine a memorable hotel stay with a dining experience. The launch of recent global hotel awards, including the first World’s 50 Best Hotels list and La Liste, which relies on guest and media reviews, has made this a competitive space. However, with its reputable brand and legacy, Michelin may have the key to success in this sector.
