We have curated this arts issue to honor and celebrate the creatives that we truly admire. Vanessa Redgrave, an incredibly influential force in the entertainment industry for over six decades, has always been a captivating figure, stirring up debates wherever she goes. From her debut on stage in 1958 to her active involvement in the Workers Revolutionary Party in the ’70s, Redgrave’s career has always aligned with various causes that often put her at odds with public opinion and the law. Fiona Golfar delves into a series of interviews with Redgrave, capturing her intimidating presence and unwavering political acuity even in her 80s. Redgrave represents those unique voices that are slowly disappearing, unafraid of societal pressures and always ready to fight for others.

Vanessa Redgrave is photographed wearing a Burberry gabardine trench coat and a wool cashmere roll-neck sweater. Her powerful presence and iconic status are undeniably captivating.

Bernadette Peters, another true icon, has been a favorite singer of Stephen Sondheim and a star in musicals for many decades. Her remarkable hair is just one aspect of her charismatic personality. In this issue, Peters discusses her long-standing passion for Broadway Barks, an annual charity event that promotes the adoption of shelter animals, which she co-founded with Mary Tyler Moore in 1999. While calling Peters a “dog nut” might not fully capture her dedication, her passions always shine through in everything she does, much like Redgrave.

Brittney Denise Parks, also known as Sudan Archives, has taken the violin on a transformative journey as part of her experimental pop/classical/Afrobeats-inspired alter ego. In an interview, Parks shares how this instrument serves as both an inspiration and a political tool. On the other hand, Albert Hammond Jr, guitarist of The Strokes and a talented solo artist, finds solace in the more meditative art of coffee making. He invites us into his home to discuss music, caffeine, and the art of making the perfect brew.

Sarah Lucas, a colossus of the art world since the 1990s, never fails to inspire with her witty, subversive, sexually provocative, and squidgy creations. As she prepares for a major exhibition at Tate Britain, she welcomes us into her studio in Suffolk, a seemingly unexpected place for an artist known for challenging the establishment. Surrounded by stuffed Bunnies, enjoying drinks with locals, and reading Yanis Varoufakis, Lucas exudes a formidable talent and a mischievous sense of humor that still shines through in her work.

What happens to an icon’s legacy when they pass away? This question led us to Benjamin, the son of the late Peter Lindbergh, the renowned German photographer and portraitist whose work defined much of ’90s fashion and played a pivotal role in establishing the reign of the supermodels. Benjamin now manages and preserves his father’s extensive archive, prompting us to explore the world of estate guardians and the challenges they face in upholding someone else’s reputation while sacrificing their own focus. Louise Benson engages in conversations with five individuals responsible for maintaining five extraordinary legacies, delving into the comforts and difficulties that come with preserving these iconic names.

Lastly, we revisit the Bright Young Things – a group that has captivated the fashion world for decades, with designers still unable to resist the influence of Evelyn Waugh’s works. Mark C O’Flaherty explores the allure of this era, from the fashion choices like high-waisted trousers and sailors’ uniforms to the sexual and intellectual freedoms enjoyed by this glittering set.
