Earth is Exceeding Safe Operating Space for Humanity in Multiple Areas of Health, Study Shows
In a new study published in the journal Science Advances, a group of international scientists has found that Earth is surpassing its “safe operating space for humanity” in six out of nine key measurements. The remaining three areas are also heading in the wrong direction.
The study examined Earth’s climate, biodiversity, land, freshwater, nutrient pollution, and “novel” chemicals (such as microplastics and nuclear waste). It revealed that all of these factors are out of balance, indicating a concerning state of the planet’s health. Only the acidity of the oceans, the health of the air, and the ozone layer are currently within the safe boundaries; however, both air and ocean pollution are increasing.
Study co-author Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, expressed his concerns about the findings, stating, “We are in very bad shape. We show in this analysis that the planet is losing resilience and the patient is sick.”
In 2009, Rockstrom and his team established nine broad boundary areas that determine Earth’s overall health. This latest update from 2015 added a sixth factor to the unsafe category, with water being reclassified due to worsening river run-off and improved measurements. These boundaries are considered crucial for the fate of the planet.
The study utilized scientific measurements and other peer-reviewed studies to establish measurable thresholds for each factor. For example, instead of the Paris climate agreement’s goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the study used 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the air. However, this year, carbon in the air exceeded 424 parts per million.
The study found that the interconnectedness of these factors is significant. When one factor deteriorates, such as climate or biodiversity, it negatively impacts other environmental issues. Conversely, improving one factor has a positive ripple effect. This highlights the importance of comprehensive action.
According to the simulations conducted, one of the most effective ways to combat climate change is through the restoration of land and forests. Increasing forest coverage to late 20th-century levels would provide natural sinks to store carbon dioxide, helping to prevent further heat-trapping in the atmosphere.
Biodiversity, which refers to the variety and abundance of species, is highlighted as a crucial issue that often receives less attention than climate change. Rockstrom emphasizes the importance of biodiversity in sustaining the carbon and water cycles, calling it a “headache” alongside the climate crisis.
While the study’s implications are deeply troubling, experts believe there is hope for corrective action. The fact that the ozone layer is showing improvement demonstrates that when the world recognizes and acts on a problem, it can be resolved. Experts agree that there are solutions available to address the remaining environmental challenges.
However, some scientists argue against the methodology and measurements used in the study. Nevertheless, experts warn that we are approaching dangerous limits and must take swift action to reduce stress on the planet. The urgency of the situation is clear, with one expert stating, “If we don’t quickly cut back on how we are stressing the Earth, we’re toast.”
