Discover Peugeot – The Upcoming Competitor in Tesla’s EV Range Battle!

For many years, Tesla has dominated the electric car range competition. The Model S held the top spot until it was challenged by the Mercedes-Benz EQS, which offered less performance for a higher price. However, a surprising new competitor has emerged: venerable French carmaker Peugeot. The recently launched Peugeot E-3008 boasts an impressive WLTP range of 435 miles. In comparison, the latest Tesla Model S provides a range of only 405 miles, and the upcoming Tesla Model 3 is expected to have a range of 420 miles.

The new Peugeot E-3008 made its debut in Sochaux, France, with a theatrical unveiling that showcased the significance Stellantis, its parent company, places on this vehicle. The E-3008 represents the first product of Stellantis’ new electric era and is built on the cutting-edge STLA Medium platform. Upon launch, three drivetrain options will be available for the E-3008: a front-wheel drive version with a 210kW (210bhp) motor and a 73kWh (net) battery, a Dual Motor all-wheel-drive version with the same battery but a more powerful 240kW (320bhp) motor, and a front-wheel-drive Long Range version with a 170kW (230bhp) motor and a larger 98kWh (net) battery.

In terms of range, the 73kWh models offer a decent 326 miles of WLTP range, which is a significant improvement over previous Stellantis electric vehicles. However, the most notable development is the Long Range 98kWh option, which boasts an impressive 435 miles of WLTP range, making it a class leader. While the Peugeot E-3008 may not be the fastest electric car on the market, with the Dual Motor version taking 6.4 seconds to reach 62mph and the other two options closer to 9 seconds, it still offers respectable performance. This is in contrast to the highly competitive MG4 XPOWER, which can hit 62mph in just 3.8 seconds.

The Peugeot E-3008 features a 21-inch wraparound Panoramic i-Cockpit, representing a significant step forward for Stellantis’ dashboard and infotainment systems. However, it’s important to note that Peugeot is positioned as a mid-range brand rather than a premium one. The interior is comfortable with ample cargo space in the rear (520 liters with the rear seats up and 1,482 liters with them folded down). Rear passengers also enjoy generous headroom and legroom. This car is designed to be an affordable, well-built option for families, rather than an extravagant luxury vehicle.

The significance of the E-3008’s 435-mile range cannot be overstated. Such a range was previously only expected from cars costing close to £100,000 ($124,000) or more. Although Peugeot has not disclosed specific pricing details, a representative from Stellantis hinted that the 98kWh version should be available for around £45,000 ($56,000). In comparison, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range is considerably more expensive in the UK, as is the Tesla Model Y.

Stellantis has plans to introduce more Peugeot models based on the STLA Medium platform, alongside Small and Large variants announced in 2021. It’s worth noting that Stellantis owns several iconic American brands, including Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, and RAM. Although Peugeot does not plan to return to the US market as a standalone brand, other European marques under the Stellantis umbrella, such as Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Maserati, are available. The STLA Medium platform will be utilized by most of these brands, and with Stellantis’ extensive production facilities in America, Canada, and Mexico, it’s highly likely that affordable, long-range EVs based on the STLA Medium platform will be made available in the North American market.

The Peugeot E-3008 may not immediately revolutionize the electric vehicle market, but it represents an important milestone. When it goes on sale in February 2024, the E-3008 will offer a range of at least 435 miles in the mid-market segment. This challenges the common criticism that electric cars do not provide enough range compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The 435-mile Peugeot E-3008 demonstrates that, soon enough, this criticism will no longer hold true.
