Meta has unveiled new artificial intelligence (AI) features for its popular social media apps in order to compete with rival AI bots like ChatGPT.
During the Meta Connect developer conference at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company, introduced these enhancements to Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
The updated tools include an AI personal assistant that can be interacted with across Meta’s messaging apps. Additionally, Zuckerberg revealed a set of AI characters, such as “Max the sous chef” and “Lily, a personal editor and writing partner,” to make the user experience more enjoyable.
Zuckerberg also teased that more AI personas are in development, stating, “Advances in AI allow us to create different AI personas to help us get different things done. This isn’t just about answering queries. It’s about entertainment and helping you connect with others.”
Furthermore, Zuckerberg announced Meta’s new Quest 3 virtual and augmented reality headset, which will be available for $500, an increase from its previous $300 price point. The updated version of Quest 3 will begin shipping on October 10th, perfectly timed before Apple’s launch of its Vision Pro headset, which will cost $3,499 per unit.
Zuckerberg also highlighted Meta’s $300 Ray Ban Stories smart glasses, which offer video recording, photo taking, livestreaming on Facebook, and music listening capabilities with the assistance of an AI.
“Smart glasses are the ideal form factor for you to let an AI assistant see what you are seeing and hear what you are hearing,” Zuckerberg stated.
Despite these announcements, Meta’s stock price remained unchanged on Wednesday.
Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in Meta’s long-term strategy of transitioning from a social media company to a technology-focused organization.
As the online advertising market has weakened and TikTok has emerged as a major competitor in the social media industry, Meta has laid off approximately 20,000 employees since last year.
However, Meta’s shares have risen over 120% since January due to improved financial results and investor enthusiasm surrounding the company’s cost-cutting initiatives.
