Tips for Traveling during Train Strikes

National Rail warns passengers to anticipate “significant disruption” during strike days. Services may also face delays and a later start on the day immediately following the strike.

For a smoother journey, National Rail recommends the following:

  • Use the Journey Planner tool, checking close to the time of each strike date.
  • Refer to the Live Trains page for the latest information regarding arrivals and departures.
  • Plan your trip in advance and check for any changes, especially for those traveling on the first and last trains during strike days.

Closure of Train Station Ticket Offices

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) has announced the closure of nearly all railway station ticket offices. Staff members will be relocated to station platforms and concourses, with ticket office facilities remaining open only at the busiest stations.

Passengers will find posters in stations informing them about potential closures. The final decision regarding office closures will be made by the government after a consultation process. The closure program is expected to span three years, but the timeline for individual office closures is not yet determined.

Explanation of Aslef’s Strikes

Aslef members are participating in industrial action as they advocate for a pay raise. The union has criticized the government for failing to meet with its negotiating team, which includes general secretary Mick Whelan, assistant general secretary Simon Weller, and executive committee president Dave Calfe.

The last meeting between the union and representatives of the employers, the Rail Delivery Group, took place in April under the agreed post-pandemic framework of the Rail Industry Recovery Group.

Mr. Whelan stated, “Do you remember Where’s Wally? Well, what we want to know is Where’s Harper? We last saw the Secretary of State for Transport in December. We last saw Huw Merriman, the Rail Minister, in January. And we last saw the train companies in April. Since then, nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not a letter, not an email, not a text message, not a phone call, not a WhatsApp. Not a word!”
