Discover How a Viral TikTok Hack May Lead to Critical Engine Failures: Stay Informed!

A motoring expert has issued a cautionary warning to drivers about a potentially damaging DIY hack circulating on social media platform TikTok.

This warning comes in response to a TikTok user named @barrywilliams50, who demonstrated pouring perfumed liquid into their car’s screenwash reservoir to create a pleasant fragrance while driving.

In the video, the influencer claimed that this solution would leave cars smelling fresh every time the screen wash button is used.

He further stated that once people try this hack, they will never want to go back to using regular windscreen wash.

However, Andrew Jervis, the CEO of leading online mechanic marketplace ClickMechanic, has cautioned against this DIY hack, highlighting the potential for damaging the vehicle’s mechanism.

Jervis emphasized that motorists should refrain from experimenting with substances that could pose risks.

He stated, “When it comes to vehicle maintenance, motorists should always exercise great care and strictly adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines.”

He further warned, “Although using DIY hacks like perfumed screenwash may seem harmless, it can lead to failures in sensitive engine components.”

One of the common causes of windscreen washer failure is blockage of the washer nozzles due to dirt or grime, which prevents the spray from working.

Jervis concluded by advising drivers to avoid tampering with foreign substances and to consult a garage or a mobile mechanic for fluid replacement if they lack the necessary knowledge or expertise.

Screenwash plays a crucial role in helping drivers maintain a clear view of the road by removing dirt and obstructions from the windscreen. Hence, it is important not to obstruct road vision, as mandated by the Highway Code.

While some people may opt to fill their screenwash reservoir with water, experts recommend using specially-designed fluid that includes anti-freeze substances like alcohol. This prevents the water from freezing on the windscreen during winter.

In the event of malfunctioning windscreen washer pumps that hinder the release of liquid, drivers can attempt to remedy the issue at home by using a safety pin to clear any blockages. However, if this approach fails, a pump replacement may be necessary.

Fortunately, the cost of a new pump typically ranges from £20 to £60, making it an affordable solution for drivers.
