Diablo 4 players were surprised with an announcement unveiling new mechanics for Season 2. The Abbatoir of Zir is a nostalgic reference to the immensely popular Greater Rifts featured in Diablo 3.
Blizzcon 2023 has concluded, leaving Diablo 4 players with more reasons to be excited than they may realize. Despite a somewhat disappointing Campfire Chat, significant details were revealed about Diablo 4 Season 2 and its future updates.
Following initial leaks, Blizzard officially announced the first expansion for Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, which aims to uncover the fate of Mephisto. Although this expansion provides something to look forward to, there’s equally exciting content coming to Diablo 4 in the near future.

During the Campfire Chat, it was announced that the upcoming Abbatoir of Zir endgame dungeons would be explained in detail through a standalone video on the Diablo YouTube channel. Reuben Marquez, Diablo 4’s Digital Marketing Manager, provided an overview of the new event, drawing immediate comparisons to Diablo 3’s Greater Rifts.
Diablo 4 Abbatoir of Zir: Challenges and rewards
Marquez describes the new Abbatoirs of Zir Pinnacle Dungeons as a “race against the clock” that offers a “truly challenging” experience for players. Similar to Nightmare Dungeons, these Abbatoirs are unlocked by obtaining Bloodforged Sigils of varying tiers.

Using one of these sigils will initiate the event, requiring your strongest build to have a chance at success. “You will need to complete all seven tiers of your Season Journey before entering one of these dungeons,” explains Marquez.

The objective is to defeat as many enemies as possible within the allotted time to summon a boss, which must be defeated before the timer runs out. In addition to obtaining high-tier loot, you’ll also receive an incredibly powerful Tears of Blood Paragon Glyph as a reward.

The Tears of Blood Glyph initially increases the power of nearby Rare nodes by 50%, with an upgrade cap “ten times greater than normal sigils”. Completing higher-tier Abbatoirs of Zir also boosts the amount of Paragon Glyph experience you earn, allowing you to maximize your board’s effectiveness.
