Oct. 11 (UPI) — Prepare to be amazed! While working on a road construction project in downtown Florida, a construction crew stumbled upon a remarkable find buried beneath the ground — an intact 19th century boat!

The Florida Department of Transportation announces that during a drainage improvement project near King Street and State Road A1A, at the base of the Bridge of Lions in downtown St. Augustine, the crew made a fascinating discovery. They noticed some timber and soon realized it was a well-preserved wooden ship measuring approximately 20 feet long.

Fortunately, prior to commencing the project, the Florida Department of Transportation had contracted Southeastern Archaeological Research (SEARCH) to handle any potential historical findings. Now, SEARCH has taken charge of exhuming the boat and exploring its historical significance. The Vice President of SEARCH, James Delgado, informed First Coast News that the boat exhibits characteristics of a locally built craft, presumably utilized for fishing or transportation purposes.

As the team proceeds with the excavation, they have unearthed additional artifacts at the site. Among their discoveries is an old leather shoe. Delgado shared, “We’ve come across fragments of ancient ceramic containers, bottles, rusty bits of iron, and even bone cuts, possibly remnants from a dinner plate scraping into the water.”
