Discover a ‘Delightfully Strange Find’ 2 Miles Beneath the Ocean Surface

An underwater mission in the Gulf of Alaska has led researchers to an intriguing discovery: a mysterious gold-colored orb found 2 miles deep on the ocean floor. This unexpected find, described as a “yellow hat” at first, has been dubbed a “golden egg” by the media. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that the orb, which measures about 4 inches in diameter, was found clinging to a rock amidst white sponges. There is a small tear at its base, raising questions about whether something tried to get in or get out of it.

The scientific community is puzzled about the nature of this object. Speculations range from it being a type of sponge or coral, to jokes about it being an alien egg. During the livestream of the find, a researcher can be heard saying, “It’s definitely got a big old hole in it. So something either tried to get in or tried to get out.” Another comment overheard was, “I just hope when we poke it, something doesn’t decide to come out. It’s like the beginning of a horror movie.”

NOAA’s Sam Candio, the leader of the expedition, expresses fascination with the deep sea, stating, “Isn’t the deep sea so delightfully strange?” The orb was retrieved using a remotely controlled suction machine and brought aboard the ship. However, its exact identity remains a mystery. Candio explains, “We still are not able to identify it beyond the fact that it is biological in origin. We likely won’t learn more until we are able to get it into a laboratory setting.” The NOAA release highlights the uncertainty surrounding the orb, stating, “It’s still unclear if the golden dome is associated with a known species, a new species, or perhaps represents an unknown life stage of an existing one.”
