How clean is your Airbnb? Meet Diana Cruz, a professional Airbnb cleaner based in Florida who specializes in maintaining impeccable cleanliness.

For the past five years, Cruz, age 29, and her husband have been committed to cleaning Airbnbs on a full-time basis. They currently serve around 10 clients, each with multiple properties, according to Cruz’s interview with Insider (verified by Insider).

While Cruz strives to leave every home sparkling clean, there are occasions when this isn’t the case. She has identified three red flags that may indicate cleanliness issues in an Airbnb property.

According to an Airbnb representative, the company emphasizes high cleanliness standards for hosts. Those who fail to comply may face warnings, suspensions, or even account removal. Airbnb has created a dedicated resource page on its website to guide hosts in maintaining clean homes.

1. Pay attention to the sheets

“Check the condition of the sheets as soon as you arrive,” advises Cruz. “You can easily tell if they smell fresh and clean or if they appear unwashed.”

Cruz emphasizes that clean and fresh bedding is crucial for a pleasant Airbnb experience. She suggests hosts keep a closet stocked with clean linens so that cleaners can promptly make the bed with fresh sheets instead of waiting for laundry.

“This way, we remove all soiled items and replace them with new ones,” explains Cruz.

2. Look under the bed

While some of us may use the space under the bed for storage or as a dust bunny haven, finding a dirty floor beneath the bed is unacceptable in an Airbnb property.

Therefore, in addition to checking the sheets, Cruz advises guests to look under the bed. This will provide insight into the attention to detail and thoroughness of the cleaning process throughout the rest of the property.

“If you find bottles and random socks under the bed, consider it a major red flag,” warns Cruz.

3. Inspect the Airbnb’s shower

Lastly, head to the bathroom to examine the cleanliness of the shower, which Cruz believes should receive extra attention from cleaners.

For instance, if you spot hairs from previous guests adhered to the tub or lingering residue from shampoo or conditioner on the shelves, it’s a clear sign that the Airbnb property may not be as clean as it should be.

“Take a close look at the shower. You can easily spot hairs or other signs of neglect along the edges. This is something that a thorough cleaner should definitely address,” advises Cruz.
