A Diamond Bar man has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison after deliberately touching the inner thigh of a sleeping woman who was seated next to him on a flight from Cleveland to Los Angeles in February 2020. Mohammad Ansari, 50, has also been ordered to pay a $33,750 fine, $1,600 in restitution, a $100 special assessment, and an additional $5,000 special assessment. Additionally, Ansari has been instructed to register as a sex offender, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Ansari was found guilty in May of abusive sexual contact. During the four-day trial, evidence was presented that on February 17, 2020, Ansari boarded a flight from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. He occupied a window seat in the 10th row while the victim, wearing a dress, sat in the middle seat next to him. Shortly after takeoff, the victim fell asleep, and the armrest separating Ansari from her was down.
During the flight to Los Angeles, Ansari placed his left hand on the victim’s right knee and intentionally moved it to her inner thigh without her consent. The person sitting in the 10th-row aisle seat next to the victim witnessed this inappropriate action. When the victim woke up, she pushed Ansari’s hand away, left her seat, and informed a flight attendant. The flight attendants carefully observed Ansari for the rest of the flight and believed that he was pretending to sleep, as shown by the evidence presented in Los Angeles federal court.
