The film features a talented ensemble cast including Melvin Gregg, Jay Pharoah, Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, X Mayo, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, and Yvonne Orji. It follows the story of nine Black former college roommates who come together for a reunion in a remote cabin to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday. Perkins explained that one of the main objectives of the film was to showcase the diversity of Black experiences, highlighting that the Black community finds strength in unity and support.
Each character in the film brings a unique perspective, and Perkins and Mayo’s characters, Dewayne and Shanika, share a heartfelt reunion that mirrors their real-life friendship. Perkins described his character as dramatic but deeply caring, emphasizing the love and connection within the friend group. Mayo, on the other hand, portrayed Shanika as the comic relief, someone who brings joy and light to the group dynamic. She humorously mentioned that shooting the movie together had its challenges, but ultimately brought them closer and turned them into a film family.
