Morocco Earthquake: Over 1,000 Dead and Hundreds Injured in Devastating Quake
On Saturday, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck close to Morocco’s historic city of Marrakech, resulting in the death of over 1,000 people and leaving hundreds injured. The earthquake caused widespread destruction of homes in villages scattered across the Atlas Mountains and caused damage to historical sites within Marrakech city.
Video footage shared online from the affected region reveals scenes of disoriented and panicked individuals navigating through dark streets clouded with dust, desperately searching for safety.
Speaking to NPR’s Scott Simon, Mourad Louksani, a hotel manager in Marrakech, described the moment the earthquake struck. Louksani recounted hearing a strange noise while in bed with his children, followed by the sensation of the apartment shaking. Fearing for their safety, they quickly left their apartment and witnessed the mass exodus of others seeking refuge outside.
Rescue workers have been working tirelessly throughout the night, although many roads leading to the affected areas remain impassable, hindering their efforts to reach the injured and those trapped under rubble. Additionally, several places are reported to be without power.
The government has dispatched trucks loaded with aid, including blankets, food, and camp cots, to assist in reaching the affected areas. Meanwhile, in Marrakech, ambulances have been rushing through the streets, transporting the injured to overcrowded hospitals.
Marrakech, a city with a rich ancient history dating back to the 11th century, features numerous stone buildings and structures that are not engineered to withstand earthquakes. The 12th century Koutoubia Mosque, a popular landmark, may have also suffered damage, as videos depict its towering minaret trembling and emitting clouds of dust.
According to reports, the red walls surrounding Marrakech’s old city, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, have partially collapsed in certain areas.
Marrakech, known to attract tourists from around the world, has witnessed an outpouring of support following the earthquake. Some tourists have even volunteered to donate blood at local hospitals to aid the injured.
President Biden expressed his condolences over the loss of life in Morocco and stated that steps are being taken to ensure the safety of American citizens in the country. France and Germany, home to a significant number of Moroccan citizens, have also offered assistance.
This earthquake is reported to be the most powerful ever recorded in the region of the Atlas Mountains. Morocco has experienced previous seismic events, including a devastating earthquake in 1960 near the coastal city of Agadir, claiming between 12,000 and 15,000 lives.
As the rescue efforts continue, the focus remains on providing aid to the affected areas and supporting the survivors in their recovery.
