Devastating Category 5 Hurricane Otis Makes Landfall in Mexico, Triggering Landslides and Widespread Destruction

Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 storm, made landfall on the Pacific coast of southern Mexico on Wednesday morning. However, by 6 a.m., it had weakened to a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 110 mph. The hurricane was expected to continue losing strength as it moved inland and dissipate over southern Mexico on Wednesday night. Prior to reaching Mexico, Otis was a tropical storm with sustained winds of 60 mph. The hurricane struck land near Acapulco, causing “catastrophic damage” and knocking out communications in the state of Guerrero. Despite this, there were no official reports of deaths linked to the hurricane. Otis damaged roads and caused landslides along a major highway leading into Acapulco. It also resulted in power cuts affecting over 500,000 customers. The city of Acapulco set up 25 temporary shelters, while the government coordinated with Guerrero officials to establish shelters elsewhere in the state. The hurricane brought heavy rain and flash flooding to southern Mexico. Before landfall, Otis rapidly intensified, reaching Category 5 status. The hurricane center warned of “extremely destructive winds near the core” and the potential for “significant loss of life and damage.” Mexican authorities deployed thousands of troops to aid in rescues. Acapulco’s port was closed, and residents were urged to either stay home or seek safety in shelters.
