Devastating California Wildfire Urges Immediate Evacuations Driven by Powerful Desert Winds

TEMECULA, California, Oct 31 (Reuters) – A wildfire in Southern California, driven by desert winds, has burned 2,487 acres (1,010 hectares) and resulted in evacuation orders for over 4,000 people in Riverside County, officials announced on Tuesday.

The Highland Fire has nearly doubled in size from Monday night to Tuesday due to Santa Ana winds blowing westward. These winds occur when dry desert air moves towards the ocean, creating a dangerous fire situation in Southern California.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), the fire is currently 10% contained after ground crews and aircraft dropping fuchsia-colored retardant battled the blaze.

Cal Fire spokesperson Thomas Shoots mentioned that mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for 1,220 homes and 4,270 residents, while an additional 1,136 homes and 3,976 residents are under evacuation warnings.

To accommodate the evacuees, authorities have opened an evacuation center for people and another one for animals. Some residents staying at a recreational vehicle resort have relocated their campers to a Walmart parking lot approximately 15 miles (25 km) away in Temecula.
