Wildfires in Hawaii have devastated the historic city of Lahaina, which once served as the capital of the islands during their time as an independent kingdom.
Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz, while surveying the damage, expressed that the city has been “reduced to ashes.” Although the fire in Lahaina is currently 80% contained, an active fire still remains, and the city is without power.
The fires have claimed the lives of at least 67 people, as search, rescue, and recovery efforts are ongoing. Governor Josh Green reported that hundreds of homes have been destroyed, leaving thousands of individuals without shelter.
Lahaina holds immense cultural significance for Hawaiians, as it was established as the royal residence of King Kamehameha I in the early 19th century.
“It is truly heart-wrenching. The road to recovery will be lengthy, but we are dedicated to supporting these families and communities,” Schatz shared on social media.
