Despite Russia’s claims, video footage proves tank was actually a tractor.

Russia recently released a low-quality video claiming that its military destroyed several of Ukraine’s high-tech Leopard tanks. However, upon analysis by The Associated Press, the grainy footage actually depicts the eradication of a tractor. The Russian Embassy announced its supposed triumph via Twitter before sharing the footage on Telegram. State-controlled broadcasters and news sites in Russia also propagated the story. But multiple military bloggers and weapons experts have called Russia’s claims into question. Footage analysis reveals that the video shows large pieces of stationary farm machinery, including a self-propelled sprayer and two combines used for harvesting crops, parked in a field at night. Thermal imaging detected these vehicles as heat sources, referring to them as targets for cold engines. Experts say it would be very unusual for tanks to park out in the open, making them easy targets for enemy gunners. The research points to Russia’s known track record of making grand claims without factual basis.
