Despite My Dog Biting My Baby’s Face, I Still Adore Dogs- But Keep My Distance

  • When my son was 11 months old, our rescue dog attacked him, leaving wounds on his face.
  • We made the difficult decision to euthanize the dog, despite having him as a puppy.
  • This traumatizing experience has made me love dogs from a distance.

When my now 7-year-old son John was 11 months old, our beloved rescue dog, Monkeypants, viciously attacked him, causing serious injuries to his forehead and eyelid. It was a horrifying sight, with blood pouring out and fears of losing his eye. We immediately called for emergency help and did our best to control the bleeding. Thankfully, we were able to rescue our baby in time.

My son required plastic surgery due to the extent of his injuries. In the midst of this crisis, I felt a sense of guilt and shame when asked about the breed of our dog. It was revealed to be a Pit Bull/Lab mix, leading to judgments and self-blame. But deep down, I knew that my baby didn’t deserve this tragedy.

We discovered that our dog had a rare form of cancer, diagnosed three weeks after John was born. Despite the grim prognosis, we chose to make his remaining time comfortable and cherished. However, as John grew and interacted with Monkeypants, we noticed signs of aggression and had to keep them separated to prevent further harm.

As much as we loved our dog, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him. The guilt and sorrow overwhelmed us as we said our final goodbyes. It was an agonizing ordeal, and my emotional scars remain profound.

My son recovered from his physical wounds, but the memories of that traumatic event still haunt me. I’ve distanced myself from the world of pet adoptions and become cautious around dogs, even at the park. Photos of Monkeypants and my son evoke a mix of pain and nostalgia, reminding me of the happy moments before tragedy struck.

I’ve learned to love dogs from a distance, appreciating their presence without risking any further emotional turmoil.
