Designers Create Dress from King Charles’ Horsehair and Nettles, Showcasing Climate Activism

Climate activists and fashion designers VIN + OMI have teamed up to create a unique ‘little black dress’ using waste horsehair and nettles sourced from King Charles’ Highgrove House. The dress will be showcased at the National Museum of Scotland as part of the Beyond the Little Black Dress exhibition. King Charles himself suggested the idea of using sustainable materials from his Gloucestershire estate for the garment. With the word ‘resist’ emblazoned on the dress, VIN + OMI aim to challenge the traditional idea of the little black dress and promote sustainable fashion solutions. The dress will become a permanent piece in the museum’s collection. Georgina Ripley, principal curator of modern and contemporary design at National Museums Scotland, expresses excitement about commissioning this “striking” dress that reflects a nature-led approach to fashion. She highlights the importance of exploring sustainable alternatives in the fashion industry, which is notorious for its environmental impact. VIN + OMI, who have been collaborating with King Charles since 2019, emphasize their commitment to avoiding the negative environmental effects of the fashion industry and their excitement to showcase what can be done with waste materials from UK estates. They praise King Charles’ eco-conscious approach to running his estates, which enables collaborations like this. The designers believe that housing their work at the National Museums Scotland will encourage future generations to adopt environmentally friendly practices in garment production. Beyond The Little Black Dress exhibition will feature over 60 looks from various designers and collections, dating back to Coco Chanel’s 1926 design. The exhibition aims to explore the evolution of fashion and includes pieces from both historical and contemporary designers. It will run from July 1 to October 29 at the National Museum of Scotland.
