Eugene Police pursued a man sought on a warrant in Deschutes County, and tragically, he took his own life when they closed in on him after a short pursuit. The man’s identity has not yet been disclosed, but the authorities found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near 11th Avenue and Garfield Street, as reported by police spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin.
The series of events leading up to this unfortunate incident began with reports of threatening phone calls made by the individual to local organizations in Eugene on Monday. Consequently, a warrant for his arrest was issued by Deschutes County Circuit Court on Tuesday, related to a failure to appear in an assault case.
A University of Oregon police officer spotted the man’s vehicle near campus, prompting the deployment of SWAT and other EPD teams due to the belief that the suspect was armed and the potential threat to the community. After officers attempted a traffic stop, the suspect fled for about two blocks before being found dead in his vehicle at 11th Avenue and Hayes Street. Importantly, no officers were involved in the fatal shooting, and Eugene Police are conducting a death investigation.
