DeSantis Voices Concerns over China Threat, Plans to Ban TikTok

Watch CNBC's full interview with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has expressed his inclination to ban TikTok due to its ownership by a Chinese company. In an interview with CNBC, DeSantis stated that he perceives a threat to the United States given China’s control over the popular social media platform. When asked about the possibility of banning TikTok, DeSantis affirmed his intention.

During the interview, DeSantis, who is currently running behind Donald Trump in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, highlighted his criticism of the US approach to China. He emphasized the need for regulatory and tax policies that prioritize domestic businesses, urging them to focus on the domestic economy. According to DeSantis, the outsourcing of jobs to China has primarily occurred due to the cost-effectiveness and financial gains associated with it, leaving the US in a challenging situation.

TikTok has been a topic of contention in Washington, with the Trump administration threatening to ban the app in the past. While no action was taken, recent legislation introduced by Congress provides the Biden administration the authority to potentially ban TikTok. Although DeSantis criticized the proposed bills as intrusive to people’s privacy, he stated that he would likely support a ban considering China’s growing influence and military power, which he sees as the top threat to the United States.
