The situation began when a user, who identified as Jewish, posted a video about combating anti-Semitism and called out anyone who anonymously posts hate speech. Another user then replied with hateful speech against Jewish people. Elon Musk responded to the anti-Semitic user, which resulted in widespread criticism and backlash. The White House condemned Musk’s post as “abhorrent promotion of anti-Semitic and racist hate.”
Musk’s post led to many major corporations pulling their advertisements from the platform, and it was also discovered that some ads were appearing next to pro-Nazi content on the site. Governor DeSantis, when asked about these developments, claimed he was unaware of Musk’s actions. He expressed support for Musk’s direction with Twitter but said he did not see the controversial comments.
During an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” DeSantis maintained his lack of awareness about Musk’s anti-Semitic comment and declined to condemn the tech billionaire. The situation became even more contentious when DeSantis claimed he never saw Musk endorse any extremist content.
However, despite DeSantis’ defense of Musk, the billionaire has a history of using the platform to endorse extremist views and conspiracies. Representative Jamie Raskin called out DeSantis, expressing skepticism that the governor was truly unaware of the controversy despite the four-day gap since Musk’s post.
