DeSantis Scours for Funding while Tim Scott Identifies Powerful Financial Interests

Republican presidential candidate, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, is attracting the attention of wealthy donors as he campaigns for president, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis struggles in the polls and searches for donors in the upscale Hamptons on Long Island. Scott himself is planning a fundraising trip to the Hamptons in August, with a gathering co-hosted by former Trump National Economic Council director Gary Cohn and billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller. The event, which will benefit the Tim Scott Victory Fund, has ticket prices ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per person, with the location being provided to donors who RSVP. Donors who have already expressed support for Scott include James Herring of Goldman Sachs and Marc Rowan, CEO of Apollo Global Management.

In contrast, DeSantis recently held fundraisers and donor meetings in the Hamptons, but the events were not as successful as anticipated. One fundraiser at the home of Robert Giuffra reportedly raised over $250,000, but the turnout was lower than expected. Trump’s event in North Carolina, on the other hand, raised over $2 million. Scott, in comparison, raised over $7 million in the second quarter and currently has over $21 million on hand.

The struggles of DeSantis in the fundraising race have led some donors to shift their support towards Scott and other potential candidates such as Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. Scott’s growing support includes donors like Ronald Lauder and Paul Singer, who have hinted at their favor for Scott over DeSantis.

Overall, Scott’s strong fundraising efforts, along with his upcoming event in the Hamptons, position him favorably in the race for the 2024 presidential nomination, while DeSantis faces challenges in gaining traction and securing major donors.
