DeSantis Concedes Trump’s Loss in 2020 Election: “It’s Clear he was Defeated”

In an interview with NBC News, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis unequivocally acknowledged that former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, contradicting false claims made by his chief rival. DeSantis stated that “whoever puts their hand on the Bible on Jan. 20 every four years is the winner,” while expressing concerns about the administration of the election. When pressed further on whether Trump lost, DeSantis replied, “No, of course he lost.” He recognized Joe Biden as the president.

In response to the interview, Trump spokesperson Steve Cheung criticized DeSantis for being a cheerleader for Joe Biden. The issue of Trump’s election defeat has posed challenges for some GOP candidates aspiring to win the 2024 Republican nomination, considering Trump’s continued popularity within the party’s base. A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted in May revealed that 69% of likely Republican primary voters do not see President Biden as the legitimate winner of the 2020 election. This denial persists despite Trump’s own election security officials affirming that the 2020 election was the most secure in history.

Currently, Trump faces four felony counts related to his actions following the 2020 presidential election. The indictment alleges that Trump intentionally spread falsehoods about widespread fraud in the election to obstruct the transfer of power. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denies any wrongdoing. Other Republican presidential candidates, including former Vice President Mike Pence, have openly acknowledged Trump’s loss. Former New Jersey governor and GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie also stated that Trump’s ego prevents him from admitting defeat.

In a recent CBS News interview, DeSantis emphasized that it is up to voters to decide whether Trump’s legal troubles should disqualify him from running for the White House again. DeSantis expressed concern about political indictments and highlighted the need for elections to focus on the future, rather than personal legal matters.
