Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ attorneys have suggested that the trial in Disney’s civil lawsuit against him should be scheduled for a date months after the November 2024 presidential election.

DeSantis has requested that the trial begin on August 4, 2025, more than two years after the lawsuit was filed by Disney. However, Disney argues that the trial should start on July 15, 2024, as stated in a filing in federal court in Tallahassee.

If the court agrees with Disney’s proposed date, the political retaliation case against DeSantis would start on the first day of the Republican National Convention, where the GOP governor is a top contender for the party’s nomination for president.

Disney has not commented on whether their proposed trial date is coincidental or a deliberate move, while DeSantis’ lawyers have yet to respond to the request for comment.

This lawsuit is just the latest battleground in a long-running feud between DeSantis and Disney. In response to Disney’s criticism of a controversial classroom bill, DeSantis and his Republican allies targeted the special tax district that has allowed Disney World to self-govern its operations. DeSantis replaced the district’s board members and accused Disney of undermining their authority, leading to the current legal dispute.

In their lawsuit, Disney alleges “targeted campaign of government retaliation” by DeSantis. They are seeking to restore the contracts and Disney World’s self-governing status, while the board has countersued in state court.

The latest joint report from both parties came after DeSantis filed a motion to dismiss Disney’s lawsuit, claiming immunity and lack of standing for the suit. DeSantis’ lawyers argue that the evidence-sharing process should be paused pending the outcome of their bid to dismiss the case, while Disney’s lawyers oppose this, stating that the alleged political retaliation is ongoing.

Both sides have proposed different schedules for the case, with DeSantis’ attorneys suggesting the completion of the discovery process by January 3, 2025, and Disney suggesting it should be wrapped up a year earlier.
