DeSantis Achieves Milestone in Iowa Campaign as Trump Shifts Focus to Biden

Former President Donald Trump took aim at President Biden as they held dueling rallies in Iowa. Speaking in Cedar Rapids, Trump emphasized attacks on Mr. Biden and claimed he is “destroying American democracy,” promising to appoint a special prosecutor to target Mr. Biden if he wins the presidency in 2024. Trump handed out new signs reading “Biden attacks Democracy” at his rally. Notably, Trump avoided focusing on his GOP opponent, Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was completing a marathon of visiting all 99 counties in Iowa. Meanwhile, at a rally in Newton, DeSantis showcased attacks on Trump, citing his response during the COVID-19 pandemic and his support for Capitol insurrection participants. DeSantis was introduced by evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, both of whom have endorsed him. This endorsement supported the argument for Trump supporters to back DeSantis. A voter from Jasper County agreed, stating that he would vote for DeSantis over Trump because he believed DeSantis is a “God-fearing man.”
