Deputy Slams Woman to Ground as She Films Man’s Handcuffing

An investigation is currently underway following an incident at a Southern California grocery store, where a sheriff’s deputy was filmed throwing a woman to the ground during a robbery investigation. The Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were apprehending an unidentified man outside the store on June 24 when the woman, who was recording the scene on her phone, was forcefully forced to the ground. The sheriff’s department released footage showing this altercation.

According to the sheriff’s department, the deputies were attempting to detain individuals who matched the descriptions provided by store security personnel in a 911 call. The footage reveals the deputies initially handcuffing the man, who was holding a cake and expressing confusion about the reason for his detention.

Meanwhile, a woman, identified by a deputy as the man’s wife, was seen capturing the confrontation on her phone. Another recording obtained by ABC-7 shows a deputy grabbing her by the neck and forcefully throwing her to the ground, despite her protests.

After forcing her to the pavement, the deputy threatened, “Stop or you’re going to get punched in the face.” He then proceeded to spray her face with a small canister, as shown in the body camera video. Throughout the incident, the woman’s husband repeatedly informed the deputies that she had cancer.

When the woman questioned why she was being “manhandled,” one deputy simply responded, “Because you’re being detained.” Both the woman and the man were eventually cited and released, though the specific charges remain unclear according to CNN’s report.

The sheriff’s department stated that the video footage will be carefully reviewed to determine the reasonableness, necessity, appropriateness, and proportionality of the force used in this incident. They emphasized their commitment to thoroughly investigating the facts surrounding the case due to their serious approach towards the use of force.

In response to the incident, both deputies involved have been reassigned from field duty pending administrative review. The actions taken by the sheriff’s department reflect their dedication to ensuring accountability and maintaining public trust.
