August 18 (UPI) — The Detroit Lions made the decision to waive Denzel Mims, a wide receiver they acquired from the New York Jets in an off-season trade, announced by the team on Friday.

The New York Jets, who waived Mims with an injury designation, have signed wide receiver Jason Moore.

Mims joined the Detroit Lions on July 19 after being traded from the New York Jets. In this trade, the New York Jets sent Mims along with a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Lions, while receiving a conditional sixth-round pick in the same draft.

Denzel Mims, currently 25 years old, entered the NFL as a second-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2020 NFL Draft. He played in 10 games for the Jets last season, totaling 186 yards on 11 catches.

In his first three seasons, Mims recorded 42 catches for 676 yards but did not score a touchdown. He appeared in 30 games for the Jets.

The Detroit Lions are in need of depth at the wide receiver position due to injuries and suspensions. Notable pass catchers for the Lions include Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, and Marvin Jones. Additionally, Trinity Benson, Antoine Green, Kalif Raymond, Dylan Drummond, Chase Cota, Maurice Alexander, and Avery Davis serve as their other wide receivers.

Unfortunately, wide receiver Jameson Williams, the 22nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, underwent ACL surgery and missed 11 games last season. He is currently suspended for the first six games of this season due to a violation of the NFL’s gambling policy. Lions coach Dan Campbell recently stated that Williams will likely miss the rest of the preseason due to a leg injury.

Jason Moore, who is 28 years old, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent signing with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019. Through four seasons, he has amassed 104 yards on six catches. The Los Angeles Chargers released Moore in January.

With the New York Jets waiving Denzel Mims due to his injury, they will not be able to utilize the conditional sixth-round pick they received in the off-season trade. Mims had been dealing with ankle and calf issues.

The Detroit Lions will be hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars in their second preseason game at 1 p.m. EDT on Saturday in Detroit. Their preseason finale will be against the Carolina Panthers on August 25 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Lions’ regular-season opener will be against the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, on September 7 in Kansas City, Mo.
