Dems Condemn Tommy Tuberville’s Action of Blocking Military Promotions

Democrats are criticizing Sen. Tommy Tuberville for single-handedly obstructing the promotions of hundreds of military personnel due to a Pentagon abortion policy.

For months, Tuberville has placed holds on the confirmations of more than 250 general and flag officers for the Pentagon. As a result, the Marine Corps is without a confirmed leader for the first time in 164 years.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan criticized Tuberville’s actions, stating that they are jeopardizing America’s safety in order to score political points.

Tuberville’s blockade is a response to a Pentagon policy that provides paid leave and travel reimbursement for service members seeking reproductive health care, including abortions. He believes the policy should be dropped.

Senators Hirono and Duckworth, both Democrats, have criticized Tuberville’s actions, with Hirono stating that it is jeopardizing national security and Duckworth emphasizing that it is a disservice to the troops and their families.

Tuberville has stated that he will unblock the promotions if the Pentagon changes its policy or if Democrats hold a vote to end the policy. However, Senate Minority Leader McConnell does not support blocking military promotions as leverage.

Duckworth, a veteran who lost both legs while serving overseas, criticized Tuberville’s stance and highlighted the impact it would have on younger, lower-ranked service members and their families.

In addition to blocking military promotions, Tuberville has faced bipartisan criticism for his defense of white nationalism, with Schumer urging him to apologize for his remarks.
