Demonstrate Empathy, Embrace Your Grandchild

President Biden frequently expresses his deep affection for his six grandchildren. However, Maureen Dowd’s recent column in The New York Times brings attention to the fact that he actually has seven grandchildren. Dowd criticizes the first family’s decision to not acknowledge the seventh child, Navy Joan, calling it a terrible choice. Navy Joan, a 4-year-old girl living in rural Arkansas, is the daughter of Hunter Biden and Lunden Roberts. Hunter had a relationship with her mother during a difficult period of addiction. The paternity settlement granted Navy Joan some of Hunter’s paintings from his recovery, but she cannot use the Biden name and the Biden family wants no involvement with her.

Dowd argues that the president should not selectively defend Hunter in various aspects of his life while rejecting this little girl. She asserts that punishing Navy Joan for something she had no control over is unfair, and the Bidens should embrace her as a part of their family. The columnist suggests that the Bidens’ stance reflects an outdated view of family, where children born out of wedlock are ignored as if they don’t exist. Dowd points out that this attitude contradicts the messages President Biden has promoted throughout his career and is incongruous with the vision of America he aims to lead.
