Democrats’ indifference to democracy revealed in Durham hearing

The House Judiciary Committee hearing with former special counsel John Durham on Wednesday provided little new information, but it did offer revealing insights. Republicans primarily requested Durham to examine his findings, which exposed serious misconduct by the FBI and Justice Department in their handling of the Russiagate investigation. On the other hand, Democrats focused on attacking Durham as a biased individual due to their disagreement with his findings. Representative Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) even scorned him for not indicting Hunter Biden, despite the fact that he was never part of the investigation. Representative Jerry Nadler from Manhattan went as far as accusing Durham of readily supporting Trump.

However, these criticisms do not change the fact that the FBI and Justice Department initiated the Crossfire Hurricane investigation based on unfounded rumors and never discovered any substantial evidence (just like the years-long Mueller investigation). Durham explained that “the FBI was too willing to accept and use politically-funded and uncorroborated opposition research such as the Steele Dossier.” Furthermore, he stated that “if there was evidence inconsistent with the narrative, they didn’t pay attention to it, they didn’t explore it, they didn’t take the logical investigative steps that should have been taken.”

Astonishingly, many significant red flags were ignored, and agents who questioned the narrative were simply transferred elsewhere. Additionally, top federal law enforcement officials repeatedly lied to the courts to obtain wiretaps on minor figures associated with Trump. Moreover, they concealed from the investigating agents the intelligence that revealed “a Clinton campaign plan underway to stir up a scandal tying Trump to Russia,” as Durham revealed. In fact, during an interview with the first supervisor of the Crossfire investigation, it was clear that this vital information had been deliberately withheld from him.

Durham testified that FBI professionals acknowledge the horrors of Crossfire Hurricane, and many have personally apologized for its flawed execution. Regardless of one’s opinion of Donald Trump, it is crucial to recognize that the weaponization of federal law enforcement poses a threat to our democracy.

Ironically, the same Democrats who vocally advocate for “protecting our democracy” are more interested in discrediting messengers like Durham and former Attorney General Bill Barr, who appointed Durham for this investigation. While FBI Director Chris Wray claims to take Durham’s findings seriously and aims to prevent similar deviations in the future, it is difficult to envision success when the party in control of the White House and Senate insists that the FBI did not go far enough.
