The Democrats’ proposal does not seek immediate return for deported individuals but rather the creation of a centralized clearinghouse at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to handle such cases. This concept is inspired by a similar organization called ImmVets, launched by Mayorkas last year, which assists noncitizen U.S. military veterans with immigration matters. The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) originally outlined this proposal in a white paper. The lawmakers assert that this clearinghouse can be established with existing departmental funding and falls within DHS’s legal authority, providing fairness and credibility to the U.S. immigration system. The revision of deportation procedures is particularly crucial for individuals who have resided in the country for extended periods and often faced permanent separation from their families due to minor infractions. By rectifying these issues, the Democrats aim to support family and community unity and address systemic concerns related to aggressive immigration enforcement disproportionately affecting Black and brown immigrant communities.
