Defy range anxiety with Mercedes GLE 4MATIC diesel plug-in hybrid: Unleash the extraordinary mileage when fully charged!

There are not many diesel plug-in vehicles available in the market as compared to petrol options. However, the GLE 4Matic large SUV is one that stands out. It boasts official consumption figures of 0.7 liters per 100 kilometers, which is equivalent to an impressive 403 miles per gallon. Now, you might find that hard to believe, and rightfully so. These “official” figures are practically impossible to achieve in real-world driving conditions. Many brands tend to exaggerate their claims. However, Mercedes makes a clear distinction between fuel consumption when using the full battery power, electric motor, and diesel engine, and when the battery is low and the engine relies mostly on diesel energy. In the former case, the consumption is listed as 0.7 liters per 100 kilometers, while in the latter case, it is 7 liters per 100 kilometers.

During my time with the GLE, I noticed that the fuel gauge barely moved despite driving on several shorter country routes. This SUV is suitable for those with a daily commute of 60 to 75 kilometers, as it can cover that distance on battery charge alone (officially 99 kilometers), as long as it is charged every day. In these electric-motor journeys, ideally no diesel is consumed, or at least very little. It’s quite a remarkable feat, I must say. I confess that I was driving slower than usual and had it in the lowest consumption mode.

To truly get the best out of this vehicle, regularly charging the 31.2 kWh battery at home or the workplace is crucial. With fuel prices on the rise again, being able to charge the vehicle and save money, especially using night-rate electricity, is a significant advantage. Even after the electric-only phase ends, there is still the benefit of hybrid activity as the battery recharges through regenerative deceleration and braking energy.

One of the key factors contributing to my high regard for this vehicle is its 2-liter diesel engine. Diesel may not be popular with most manufacturers, as petrol is easier to deal with. However, when the battery is not in use, diesel is a good fuel to carry the extra load due to its exceptional pulling power from low revs. I must confess, I do enjoy driving a diesel vehicle, despite its declining popularity. Mercedes has gone to great lengths to reduce emissions to a mere 18 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Although this is an official figure, it serves as the basis for vehicle registration tax and road tax, which is only €140 per year, believe it or not. To put that into context, the much smaller Toyota Prius petrol plug-in emits 11 grams per kilometer. Considering the size and weight of the GLE, emitting only 18 grams is quite an achievement.

As I drove around, I couldn’t help but contemplate the possibilities. Here, I had a luxurious SUV ferrying me on electric charge, with the added assurance of a full tank of diesel (65 liters) should I decide to embark on a long journey. Range anxiety was not a concern in this case. Of course, the GLE offers more than just fuel efficiency; it showcases what can be achieved. This is expected, given its price tag of over €100,000. Comfort is not compromised, as the seating is broad and supportive, and the cabin offers ample space, adorned with leather and a two-in-one giant screen that serves as the centerpiece. Rear-seat passengers are treated exceptionally well, with generous legroom. The extensive safety features and assists from Mercedes are top-notch. The lowered suspension enhances its dynamics, while the nine-speed automatic transmission operates seamlessly. The all-wheel drive ensures excellent grip.

I rarely heard the engine’s low-key growl, thanks to the vehicle’s excellent insulation. I must admit, I find that sound appealing. Considering its size, the GLE responds well to my commands and handles reassuringly, regardless of the road conditions. It offers an unusually high driving position for an SUV, which I found quite pleasant.

The irony is not lost on me – a car with a price tag over €100,000 aiming to lower running costs through a combination of diesel and electricity. In other words, they want you to invest in the GLE, if you can afford it, and reap the cost-saving benefits afterward. I can envision this car being perfect for a growing two-income family who enjoy weekend getaways while still benefiting from electric driving during the weekly commute. Regardless, it offers something unique as a diesel plug-in vehicle and is definitely worthy of a test drive.
