In a recent interview, Keith Carter, the offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the New York Jets, discussed the challenges his unit faced during the team’s first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers nearly a month ago. While Carter believed the unit played well in that game, it was the joint practice with Carolina that left a lasting impact on the offensive line coach.
During the practice, the Jets’ offensive line struggled with pressures and sequences that would have resulted in sacks on game day. The constant shuffling of players added to the difficulty, and Carter described the experience as a “kick in the pants” for the team. However, he also recognized the importance of this moment of growth for his linemen.
Carter emphasized the significance of every rep, especially now that Aaron Rodgers is the team’s quarterback. He admitted that the joint practice was a low point for the offensive line, but he commended their response and stated that they have been on the right track ever since.
Due to injuries and recoveries, the Jets’ offensive line had not been able to feature five consistent players until recently. However, with the return of Duane Brown, Laken Tomlinson, Connor McGovern, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Mekhi Becton, Carter believes they now have a solid starting lineup.

As the Jets prepare for their opener against the Buffalo Bills, the offensive line remains a question mark. While the Bills’ defense will be missing Von Miller, they still have formidable pass rushers like Gregory Rousseau, who had eight sacks in the previous season.
Carter emphasized the importance of protecting Rodgers and ensuring he remains healthy throughout the year. He views it as a vital responsibility, considering Rodgers’ caliber as a quarterback.
Despite the challenges, Carter is confident that his unit has continued to progress. He emphasized the sense of urgency and the need to perform well when playing with a quarterback like Rodgers. Carter concluded by saying, “We gotta do our job and do it well because we have Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.”
