  • The 25-year-old Brazilian has extensive experience playing in Serie A
  • He was part of the squad that reached the Europa Conference League final

Brighton has officially confirmed the signing of Fiorentina defender Igor Julio following the completion of his medical examination.

Earlier reports from Mail Sport had indicated that the Seagulls were close to securing the 25-year-old player.

Julio was a key member of the Fiorentina squad that made it to the final of the Europa Conference League last season and played in the match against West Ham.

In the 2022/23 season, the Brazilian made 42 appearances for Fiorentina in various competitions.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi was keen to strengthen the team’s defense after facing difficulties in acquiring Levi Colwill from Chelsea, who was on loan at Brighton last season.

Colwill was praised for his strong aerial and physical presence, and Igor Julio is expected to bring similar qualities to the team.

Although not widely known, Julio fits Brighton’s strategy of identifying promising players who could become unexpected fan favorites.

Brighton’s transfer activities are not limited to Julio, as they are also close to completing a deal for 18-year-old Preston star Jacob Slater. The young player has been described by Preston manager Ryan Lowe as “phenomenal”.

Slater joined Preston’s U12s level and signed his first professional contract last September, shortly after making his debut.

In addition to these signings, Brighton will be loaning winger Jeremy Sarmiento to West Brom.

Sarmiento, an Ecuador international, has made 19 appearances for Brighton in two seasons and also participated in the Qatar World Cup.
