Decoding PSSD: Expert’s Insights on its Potential Root Cause

A woman expressed her concern about her decreased sexual capability after taking Lexapro, an antidepressant. She had already discontinued the drug for three months but still experienced numbness even when using a hard-bristled brush. This condition is known as Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD), characterized by symptoms like genital numbness, diminished libido, and pleasureless orgasms. Genital numbness is considered the primary clinical indicator for diagnosing PSSD.

Research demonstrates that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) cause genital numbness within 30 minutes of consumption. Professor David Healy reveals that SSRIs have a similar effect to applying a local anesthetic like lidocaine to the clitoris or penis. While many individuals regain normal sexual function after discontinuing the medication, there remains a group of people who experience long-term genital numbness lasting for decades.

According to a recent study published in the Annals of General Psychiatry, the estimated risk of developing PSSD is 0.46% among patients taking SSRIs or serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). With millions of people worldwide using antidepressants, including 8.3 million in England and over 32 million adults in the US, the potential number of PSSD cases could be significant. However, accurate prevalence figures are challenging due to the exclusion of those unable to stop the medication.

While the underlying biological mechanisms of PSSD are still being investigated, Professor Healy speculates that the dysfunction may result from peripheral nerve endings in the skin no longer functioning correctly. He suggests the development of a medical test to validate the disorder and improve conversations between doctors and patients, as many individuals are often disbelieved when seeking help.
