Debunking the Myth of Beer Goggles: Alcohol Provides ‘Dutch Courage’ for Approaching Strangers

  • Research Shows Alcohol Doesn’t Affect Attractiveness

Over time, many regrettable moments have been attributed to the phenomenon of “beer goggles.”

However, recent research suggests that these excuses may no longer hold water.

Scientists now believe that drinking alcohol does not actually make others appear more attractive. Instead, it simply gives people the confidence to approach someone they already find attractive.

Previous studies on the beer goggles phenomenon involved participants rating the attractiveness of others’ photos while sober and then again after consuming alcohol.

In the latest study conducted in the United States, researchers introduced a more realistic element by allowing participants to potentially meet the individuals they were evaluating.

Debunking the Myth of Beer Goggles: Alcohol Provides ‘Dutch Courage’ for Approaching Strangers

Previous research on the beer goggles phenomenon typically had participants rate photos of others for attractiveness while sober and again after drinking

Dr. Molly Bowdring and Dr. Michael Sayette from Stanford University conducted an experiment in which 18 pairs of male friends in their 20s were brought to a laboratory to have a drink and rate the attractiveness of images of people.

The use of pairs aimed to simulate the social interactions that typically occur in a real drinking setting.

The results showed that whether the participants were intoxicated or not had no impact on how attractive they found others. However, alcohol did affect their willingness to interact with individuals they found appealing.

The research, published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, suggests that the influence of alcohol lies in its ability to increase confidence when approaching potential romantic interests.
