Death of Suspect in Teen’s Murder Discovered in Cell

The man suspected of murdering Nevada teenager Naomi Irion last year will never stand trial for the crime. According to NBC News, Troy Driver, 43, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Lyon County Jail during a routine check on Sunday evening. Preliminary details suggest that he took his own life through asphyxiation. Sheriff Brad Pope stated that Driver was housed in a maximum security jail cell with no contact with other inmates.

Driver was awaiting trial for charges including kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder in the Irion case, as reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal. The 18-year-old’s body was discovered in a shallow grave on March 30 last year, more than two weeks after she was abducted from the parking lot of a Walmart in Fernley, around 35 miles east of Reno. Investigators believe that the suspect forced his way into her vehicle while she was waiting for a shuttle to work. “I deeply regret that he took the easy way out before the trial, but I have no doubt in my mind, given what I have been privy to, that he is the perpetrator,” expressed her brother, Casey Valley, on Facebook, according to 2News. “A lot of mixed feelings at the moment.” (Read more Nevada stories.)
