Bill Richardson, a former Democratic governor of New Mexico and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 75. The Richardson Center for Global Engagement confirmed his death.
The center stated that Richardson died at his home in Chatham, Massachusetts.
“Throughout his life, Governor Richardson dedicated himself to serving others, both during his time in government and in his efforts to secure the release of wrongfully detained individuals abroad,” said Mickey Bergman, vice president of the organization.
“Governor Richardson would speak with anyone if it meant bringing freedom to someone. The world has lost an advocate for those unjustly held abroad, and I have lost a mentor and dear friend.”
Bill Richardson was born in Pasadena, California, in 1947. He was the son of a bank executive father and a Mexican-born mother.
Last month, Richardson received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for his extensive work as an international crisis negotiator. He continued this role even during his two terms as governor of New Mexico from 2003 to 2011. Prior to his governorship, Richardson served in Congress and as President Bill Clinton’s U.N. ambassador and energy secretary.
Recently, Richardson played a significant role in securing the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner, who had been held captive in Russia for approximately 10 months until her release was announced in December.
Throughout his career, Richardson also helped secure the release of Americans in Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Colombia, and Bangladesh.
Richardson established the Richardson Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering international dialogue.
Although Richardson initially sought the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, he withdrew from the race to endorse Barack Obama. Later, he faced allegations of violating campaign finance laws related to an alleged affair but no charges were ultimately filed.
