Dealer Convicted of Selling Lethal Drugs to “The Wire” Actor Michael K. Williams Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence

A drug dealer in New York City was handed a 10-year prison sentence on Friday for supplying fentanyl-laced heroin to actor Michael K. Williams, known for his role in “The Wire,” leading to his death. Irvin Cartagena, a resident of Aibonito, Puerto Rico, pleaded guilty to drug distribution conspiracy in April. In a plea deal, Cartagena admitted that some of the drugs he sold resulted in Williams’ death. Williams fatally overdosed in his Brooklyn penthouse apartment in September 2021, just a day after purchasing the drugs from Cartagena in a recorded transaction.

Williams gained fame for his portrayal of the character Omar Little in the critically acclaimed HBO series “The Wire,” which aired from 2002 to 2008. Besides his work on the show, Williams also appeared in films and other TV series like “Boardwalk Empire.” Throughout his career, he received five Emmy nominations, including three for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

Cartagena faced a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum of 40 years. However, he expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he never intended for anyone to lose their life through drug sales. U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams acknowledged that when Cartagena wasn’t using drugs, he was described as helpful, humble, and hardworking. The judge expressed hope that with proper treatment, Cartagena can embark on a more productive and law-abiding path.

Prosecutors revealed that Cartagena and his associates continued to sell fentanyl-laced heroin in Manhattan and Brooklyn even after Williams’ death. Cartagena later fled to Puerto Rico, where he was apprehended in February 2022. In total, four arrests were made in connection with Williams’ overdose death. The drug trafficking organization associated with the case had been operating in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood since August 2020, and authorities were aware that others had died from the drugs they were selling.

At sentencing, Cartagena’s lawyer argued that his client was merely one of several individuals selling the drugs and that imposing a lengthy prison term would not bring back the life lost. Prosecutors recommended a sentence of at least 12 years, while the probation department suggested a 20-year term due to Cartagena’s previous drug-related convictions. However, Judge Abrams deemed those recommendations excessively high, stating that the given 10-year sentence was severe but appropriate.

This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of drug trafficking and the need for strict punishment to deter such activities. The entertainment industry mourns the loss of a talented actor, while the legal system works to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
