Deadline for Facebook settlement claims is August 25th: A guide to filing for a payout

In the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook users now have the opportunity to receive compensation from the social media giant.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently settled a class-action lawsuit for $725 million, acknowledging the unauthorized sharing of user data. Users have until the upcoming Friday, August 25, to submit a claim and potentially receive a portion of the settlement.

If you are a current or former Facebook user, here’s what you need to know to participate.

Who is eligible for compensation?

Anyone who used Facebook between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, can submit a claim, even if they no longer have an active Facebook account. The scandal involved Cambridge Analytica accessing the personal data of 87 million Facebook users without their consent through a quiz app.

How can I claim my compensation?

To receive compensation, you must submit a claim within the specified deadline. Failure to do so will result in no payment. Additionally, if you do not file a claim, you waive your right to individually sue Facebook for privacy violations.

You can initiate the process by completing a simple form either online at facebookuserprivacysettlement.com or by mailing a printed version. Current Facebook users should also have received instructions and a link to the settlement page within the app or site.

The form requires essential information such as your email address, phone number, or username/user ID to confirm your account. You must also provide payment details to receive your compensation. If you no longer have access to your account, provide the approximate years it was active, and if possible, refer to old sign-up and cancellation emails for accurate dates.

If you have had multiple Facebook accounts, you can only file a claim for one of them. Choose the account you used for the longest duration.
