DC Mother Issues Warning to Suburbs over Surging Crime in Nation’s Capital: “This Issue Has Spread Everywhere”

Asiyah Timimi finds it difficult to sleep at night and is constantly concerned about the increasing crime rates in the country. “I’m afraid to stop at a stop sign or stop light because I fear someone might block me off and carjack me or shoot me,” Mrs. Timimi shares with Fox News. This fear is not unique to her, as six percent of registered voters consider crime to be the most serious issue facing the nation, according to a recent Fox News poll.

Asiyah, who was born and raised in the nation’s capital, has personally experienced the pain caused by the escalating crime. “I have three sons, and all of them have been victims of gun violence in D.C,” she reveals. While two of her sons have mostly recovered from their injuries, the youngest remains paralyzed from the waist down. Khalin was shot eight times during a robbery attempt. Data from the D.C. Metropolitan Police shows a 39% increase in violent crime over the past year. In just over seven months, the city has already surpassed the total number of homicides that occurred in all of 2018, and is on track for the deadliest year in two decades.

These recent crime statistics deeply affect individuals like Mrs. Timimi. Every time her sons leave the house, she worries whether they will return safely. “Prayer is something I am constantly doing,” Mrs. Timimi confesses to Fox News. Unfortunately, it was too late for her husband, who was fatally stabbed while trying to intervene in an attack on an elderly man in his presence.

After witnessing so much violence, Asiyah has a warning for the suburbs: “If this issue is not addressed here, it will eventually spread there. This is the result of it. It’s not just an issue in our inner city anymore, it’s everywhere.”

A June PEW Research Poll revealed that 64% of Republicans and 52% of Democrats believe that violent crime is a significant problem. While politicians and presidential candidates debate about who is to blame for the rising crime, Asiyah wants them to stand by her side at a crime scene to witness firsthand the devastation that plagues communities. “They need to come out and console some of those parents and experience what we’re going through, to understand that we are living in a war zone.”
