Even at the time of his passing, he remained committed to recovering Glaser’s precious paintings from renowned institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Kunsthaus Zurich.
Bettina Basanow, one of Glaser’s heirs residing in Denver, fondly remembers Mr. Rowland’s exceptional ability to genuinely connect with them. She remarked, “He always made us feel cared for. It wasn’t just about business. We valued him as both a friend and a lawyer.”
David John Rowland was born on March 21, 1956, in New London, Conn., to Barbara Ann and John Robert Rowland, spending most of his formative years in nearby East Lyme. It was there that he developed his love for activities like swimming, fishing, and sailing a boat in the picturesque Long Island Sound.
He pursued his higher education at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., successfully graduating in 1978. His passion for the German language, cultivated in high school, led him to spend his junior year in Vienna, deepening his understanding of the culture.
After completing his law degree at New York Law School in 1983, he returned to Europe for further studies at the McGeorge School of Law, part of the University of the Pacific. During this time, he had the opportunity to immerse himself in the German-speaking world, spending months in Salzburg and working at a law firm in Munich. These experiences greatly influenced his career trajectory and frequently drew him to Berlin.
Aside from his sister Elizabeth, Mr. Rowland is survived by his mother Barbara Ann Rowland, another sister named Leslie Rowland Jacques, three nieces, and three nephews.
Not only was Mr. Rowland dedicated to the recovery of art, but he also had a profound appreciation for it. He held membership at the esteemed National Arts Club in New York and, in Berlin, where he maintained an apartment, he collaborated with his friend Frank Kutschera, an architect, to establish the renowned Galerie Rowland Kutschera.
