David Ortiz Offers Support to Wander Franco Amid Troubling Accusations

Baseball legend David Ortiz has reached out to Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco in light of an ongoing investigation regarding his alleged relationships with minors in the Dominican Republic. During an appearance on the “Grandes En Los Deportes” podcast hosted by ESPN Deportes’ Enrique Rojas, Ortiz expressed his willingness to assist Franco during this difficult time. Ortiz clarified that he has no knowledge of the situation but wanted to offer his support. He emphasized that he refrains from making comments or giving opinions on matters he is not fully aware of.

Ortiz recounted asking San Diego Padres’ star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. for Franco’s phone number during a conversation about Tatis’ previous suspension for using a banned substance. Ortiz hoped to contact Franco to help him in any way possible. He described the situation with Franco as complicated, expressing his hope that the allegations against Franco turn out to be false. Ortiz also recalled a conversation he had with Franco during the MLB All-Star Game and highlighted the importance of guiding and supporting younger players.

Franco, 22, has been placed on the restricted list by the Rays as MLB investigates the allegations made in deleted social media posts. The Dominican Republic Attorney General’s office is also conducting its own investigation. On Tuesday, a Dominican newspaper reported that Franco was linked to a second alleged relationship with an underage girl, and a complaint was filed against him. Franco denied the allegations in a video posted on Instagram Live, expressing frustration with the rumors and emphasizing his focus on his career.

MLB investigators and representatives from the Dominican Republic Attorney General’s Office have traveled to Franco’s hometown to conduct their investigation. On Thursday, journalist Hector Gomez shared a quote from a source close to the investigations, suggesting that Franco’s MLB career could be in jeopardy due to the ongoing probe. As a result, Franco will miss the upcoming series against the Los Angeles Angels.
