David Lammy advocates for boosting Britain’s EU relations through a foreign policy reset

David Lammy, the shadow foreign secretary, envisions a reset of foreign policy under a future Labour government as a means to strengthen ties between Britain and the EU.

Highlighting the need for the UK to regain its position as a prominent player on the global stage, Mr Lammy made these remarks while attending a gathering of center-left leaders in Montreal, Canada.

He stated, “The absence of the UK on the international stage is felt globally. The international community actively desires the return of Britain.”

Mr Lammy drew a distinction between two visions of Britain: the outward-looking and internationally connected Great Britain, and what he referred to as “Little England,” which he believes is epitomized by Rishi Sunak’s approach.

These sentiments align with the views expressed by Sir Keir Starmer during a meeting hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, where Labour emphasized its intention to rebuild the bridges that the Tories have burnt with other nations.

For Labour, forging closer ties with the EU remains a top priority.

Mr Lammy said, “We consider UK relations with the European Union to be of utmost importance.”

He further criticized the lack of constructive dialogue between the UK and EU under the current government, describing it as bizarre.

Labour aims to approach the review of trade arrangements with the EU in a constructive manner, building on the partnership witnessed during the Ukraine crisis.

Therefore, they propose a new UK/EU security pact.

On Tuesday, Mr Lammy, along with shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves, will join the Labour leader in Paris for talks with Emmanuel Macron, where they will outline plans to address the challenge of small boats crossing the English Channel.
