Carol Higgins Clark, a renowned mystery author and daughter of the iconic suspense novelist Mary Higgins Clark, passed away at the age of 66. Her family revealed that Carol had been battling appendix cancer. Although Carol initially aspired to become an actress, she veered into the path of her mother’s career. In 1975, while home from college for the summer, Carol assisted her mother by retyping one of her book drafts, as reported by the New York Times. This experience sparked conversations between mother and daughter about characters and plot, leading Carol to provide dialogue and reference suggestions that would resonate with younger readers, according to the Washington Post.
“I did that for a number of her books, which was great for me to learn about how to write,” said Carol Higgins Clark. Later on, the two collaborated on holiday-season thrillers, where Mary Higgins Clark’s beloved character, amateur detective Alvirah Meehan, occasionally intersected with Carol’s main recurring character, private eye Regan Reilly. Interestingly, it was thanks to Carol Higgins Clark’s objection that Meehan’s character was saved from being killed off by her mother. Raised in New Jersey and having lived in New York and California, Carol authored more than a dozen novels and even pursued her acting career, appearing in movies based on her mother’s books.
