Dates of Walkouts and Impacted Services

Commuters are set to experience severe disruptions in their travel plans this summer as 20,000 rail workers prepare for a three-day strike in their ongoing pay dispute. Furthermore, train drivers have recently announced a new overtime ban, which adds to the potential chaos during the peak of the summer holiday season.

In response to the failure of train companies to present a revised pay offer, members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union will go on strike across 14 train operators in England. This latest round of strike action will have an impact on fans hoping to attend two Ashes Tests as well as The Open Championship golf tournament.

In addition to the rail strikes, London Underground workers have also planned four days of walkouts during July.

What are the dates for the upcoming train strikes?

The RMT has announced that 20,000 rail workers, including station staff, train managers, and catering workers, will be striking on the following days:

  • Thursday, July 20
  • Saturday, July 22
  • Saturday, July 29

These three days of strikes will directly impact cricket fans traveling to the fourth and fifth Ashes Tests. The fourth Test is scheduled to take place at Old Trafford in Manchester from Wednesday, July 19 to Sunday, July 23. The fifth Test in London will run from Thursday, July 27 to Monday, July 31.

The strikes will also coincide with The Open Championship, happening from Thursday, July 20 to Sunday, July 23 at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

Furthermore, train drivers have declared a fresh overtime ban. Starting from Monday, July 31 to Saturday, August 5, members of the train drivers’ union Aslef will refuse to work overtime as part of their long-standing pay dispute.

This will be the fourth week-long ban on overtime since May. The strikes initiated by both RMT and Aslef have caused significant disruptions for rail passengers, including those attending events such as the FA Cup final, the Epsom Derby, Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” world tour concert, and the Eurovision final in Liverpool.
