Daryl Dixon: A Compelling Character with Striking ‘The Last of Us’ Resemblance

“The Walking Dead” spin-off has introduced a captivating storyline involving a child who may hold the key to immunity in the zombie apocalypse. As Daryl embarks on a mission to bring the boy across France, the show bears some resemblance to the popular video game series, “The Last of Us.” The boy’s birth parallels that of Ellie in “TLOU,” where she gained immunity from a widespread infection. However, the show has its own unique twists and turns that keep viewers engaged and guessing.

In the first two episodes of the Daryl Dixon spin-off, we witness the stoic Daryl being tasked with the responsibility of transporting a young boy named Laurent to a Buddhist monk in Paris. The exchange is meant to secure Daryl’s passage back to America. What makes Laurent particularly special is that he was born after his mother’s death and subsequent reanimation as a zombie. Consequently, he is believed to be a messiah figure, destined to lead humanity’s revival.

This plotline may sound familiar to fans of “The Last of Us,” as both the game and the TV series explore the concept of a real-life cordyceps fungus that transforms humans into zombies. In the game, a young girl named Ellie is born after her mother’s infection, rendering her immune to the fungus’ effects. The protagonist, Joel, is tasked with safely delivering Ellie to medical professionals in search of a cure. The show diverges from this premise in that Laurent is surgically removed from his infected mother’s womb, rather than being born naturally before her death. Moreover, it is not yet confirmed whether Laurent is truly immune to the zombie virus, unlike Ellie, who exhibits clear signs of immunity.

As a dedicated viewer of “The Walking Dead,” I can’t help but feel some frustration. While it is intriguing to finally explore the possibility of a cure for the zombie virus, the show had ample opportunities to delve into this storyline before “The Last of Us” game was even released. The character of Judith, Rick Grimes’ daughter, could have served as a beacon of hope and a potential cure as she was born during the apocalypse. Similarly, “Fear the Walking Dead” hinted at Alicia potentially holding the key to a zombie cure before her departure from the series.

Executive producer Greg Nicotero acknowledged the similarities between the two shows but mentioned that production was already underway prior to the release of “The Last of Us.” It’s clear that the team behind “TWD” had knowledge of the game’s content, making the similarities all the more perplexing. It feels as though the show is desperately clinging to relevancy, instead of exploring fresh and original ideas. Perhaps it would have been better to let the series conclude with its planned finale in 2022, as it now appears to be running out of innovative concepts.
